About this Discussion

According to the IPCC, the concentration of greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere is directly linked to the average global temperature on Earth, and the concentration has been rising steadily. The most abundant greenhouse gas, accounting for about two-thirds of greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide, is largely the product of burning fossil fuels.

There is alarming evidence that important tipping points, leading to irreversible changes in major ecosystems and the planetary climate system, may already have been reached or passed. One of the most urgent challenges facing countries across the world today is how to achieve economic prosperity and development while also combating climate change.

The Paris climate change agreement commits nations to limit global temperature rise to no more than 2°C above pre-industrial levels, with countries pledging to cut or curb their greenhouse gas emissions – through a combination of mitigation and adaptation measures – by 2030.

Each year, the volume of global food waste can reach up to 1 billion tons, with 60% of it coming from household. The UNEP Regional Office for West Asia and GO4SDGs launched a campaign to raise awareness to reduce food waste during Ramadan, foster behaviour change, and boost sustainable action. Although this year's Ramadan has ended, we should continue raising awareness about reducing food waste.

The recent 2021 World Bank Group/International Monetary Fund spring meetings took place during challenging times. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused loss of life and exacerbated global poverty and inequality, while draining governments resources. Meanwhile, the impacts of climate change are starting to be felt on a broad scale, resulting in the loss of homes, crops and livelihoods. The year 2020 was tied for the hottest on record and boasted, among other things, a record number of destructive storms crossing the Atlantic. On top of the long-lasting economic effects of the pandemic, the impacts of climate change are poised to only get worse.

It will take decades to achieve the enormous reductions required globally; in the meantime emissions will continue and so will the warming. We must get better at managing climate disasters as they become more numerous. Resilience matters because it is impossible to wall off the country from the effects of climate change. Redirecting federal money toward resilience rather than simply rebuilding after disasters will be hard. But the longer we wait, the harder it will become as the costs of climate change mount.

To give investors access to decision-useful information to effectively price and manage climate risks, there is an urgent need to strengthen the “climate information architecture.” Data gaps make it difficult to assess firms’ exposure to climate risk. A consistent, timely, and uniform implementation of internationally agreed sustainability reporting standards is necessary.

From the outset CDP has advanced global efforts toward net-zero, catalyzing action by subnational groups. On the route towards net-zero 2050, the organisation that strives to drive companies and governments to reduce their GHG emissions recognises "all of the above" approach which prioritises emissions reduction along with filling the climate finance gap. What's their take on carbon offsets to reach this destination?
