Developed jointly by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and UPM Umwelt-Projekt-Management GmbH, this Training of Trainers (ToT) program aims to enhance understanding of climate-resilient opportunities in the sanitation sector and promote citywide inclusive sanitation (CWIS) principles in Africa. The training underscores the relevance and urgency of integrating climate action into sanitation planning and implementation.
Module 4 - Carbon Markets for Sanitation. Introduction.
This module introduces participants to the fundamentals of carbon credit projects and the functioning of global carbon markets. It explains how emission reductions are quantified, verified, and traded, and explores how sanitation projects can generate carbon credits by reducing methane and nitrous oxide emissions. Participants gain insight into the evolution of carbon markets from the Kyoto Protocol to the Paris Agreement, key mechanisms under Article 6, and opportunities and challenges for sanitation-related carbon projects—particularly in the African context.
